Tuesday, 27 May 2025 - South Africa: Crypto holders can earn up to 11% per year on their crypto by staking on Luno, the leading crypto app in South Africa*.

Luno now offers six crypto assets that can be staked with yields ranging from 6 - 11% per annum. Until 16 June 2024, investors who stake their Cosmos (ATOM) on Luno will earn up to 18% and thereafter 11% - this is the highest reward rate offered by a licensed exchange in South Africa.
Staking is a process where you use your crypto holdings to verify transactions on a blockchain network. In return for locking up your crypto to stake, you get rewarded in crypto. Staking is how transactions are verified on the Cosmos (ATOM) network, as well as several other cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL).
“Staking is one of the safer ways to earn high yield on crypto, in comparison to lending and other methods, which is why we’re aiming to stake as many cryptocurrencies as possible,” says Christo de Wit, Luno Country Manager for South Africa.
Staked crypto stays in customers’ accounts at all times. There are no minimum investment amounts to start staking, and rewards are automatically paid into staking wallets within one to seven days. There are no fixed terms and no hidden fees. Customers can stake and unstake whenever they want.
Over 150,000 Luno customers have created staking wallets, and over R1.5 billion has been staked through Luno. ETH is the most popular staked crypto asset, and SOL is the second most popular on Luno. ATOM offers the highest rates of up to 18%.
“Staking rewards are added to your existing balance daily, so your earnings may compound faster if you keep them there. But remember that crypto can go up and down in value. This means it can drive exponential growth if the value of your investment goes up, but you could lose out if the monetary value of your asset goes down. Luno provides clear information upfront on all the benefits and pitfalls, but make sure you know what you’re investing in,” explains de Wit.
Luno currently offers staking on the Cosmos (ATOM) network, as well as Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), Cardano (ADA), Polkadot (DOT), and Near (NEAR).
Crypto | Annual yield on your investment |
